Breaking News - As they Say in the Media

---- We open most Fridays from 5 pm. Meals on first Friday of month ----
The situation regarding entry to the Tanunda Recreation Park and thus the Hut has changed. You can now enter through the new entrance near the playground in Bilyara Road.

Apparently the bitumenisation has been completed.

Hooray! We're now listed on Google Maps

---- We open most Fridays from 5 pm. Meals on first Friday of month ----
Now we are on Google Maps more people may find us. Feedback suggested that even some locals didn't know where our Hut is so we decided to do something about that.

When we checked Google Maps, the Tanunda Recreation Park toilet, the show hall, playground, and the football club were flagged on the Tanunda map, but absolutely nothing appeared indicating our beloved Hut.  It was just a grey shape after one zoomed in on the map but if you didn't know what it was, it remained just a grey shape.

After contacting Google Maps administration several times we managed to get both the Hut flagged and the new entrance off Bilyara Road as previously our address was shown often on Park Street because it's parallel with it.

Google still has some updating to do, but you can find our location here marked as 18.

Now that you know exactly where we are, please come visit us on Friday evenings.

A Remembrance Day of Sunshine and Reflection

---- We open most Fridays from 5 pm. Meals on the first Friday of the month however, The Hut access has been suspended until further notice due to construction works ----
Remembrance Day turned out to be warm and sunny - perfect for our outdoor commemorative service. It was also a great relief following weeks of intermittent rain.

Although the attendance was what I would call 'moderate', Friday of course is a workday, so many people who may have attended on a weekend weren't available at 10:30 am when our commemorative service commenced. A few people turned up shortly before 11 am.

Priest and currently serving Army chaplain, Mark Sexton again did an excellent job throwing in a couple of anecdotes based on military service. Our President, Trevor Klose was the Master of Ceremonies and similarly did a respectable job taking attendees through the order of service.

Several wreaths were laid and all of us who attended had time to reflect on those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice and thousands of others whose service we honour, including those now in the Australian Defence Force.

Preparing for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day begins a few months ahead of the scheduled events and requires quite a lot of work from committee members.

Close to the events, we're fortunate and most appreciative to have the help of Faith Lutheran College students to install our crosses. Each cross bears the name of one of our fellow Australians who died in service to our country and is placed in alphabetical order according to the theatre of war in which they served.

The photo above shows several students and their teacher supervised by our member Neville Jaeschke who volunteers to do this job twice per year. The teacher told us these year-eleven students are going to be college leaders in their final year at the college.

The finished job looks very impressive as you can see in this photograph.

In previous years we have invited people to have lunch at our Hut following the service but unfortunately, due to the construction work currently being undertaken in the Tanunda Recreation Park, it wasn't possible to do so this year.

By ANZAC Day 2023 we expect the construction work to have been completed and we'll be back to normal.

Your internet site updates

---- We open most Fridays from 5 pm. Meals on first Friday of month ----

Unless you are very observant and visit each page on this site frequently, you probably haven't noticed the changes. You do visit don't you?

No? Oh well, you're here now so here goes:

Instead of advertising every Happy Hour, I've placed a marquee (sliding text line) at the top of each post to remind everyone when we are open and when our mystery meals are on offer.

The next changes aren't as obvious. Let Jillian show you where the first is. Follow Jillian's direction up to the top of the right-most column and you'll see this item:

As the titles suggest, you can now pay your membership subscription or for a name badge using credit card processed through our secure SQUARE account. It's very easy, try it in December when you subscribe for the 2023 calendar year.

The next change is found on the Advocacy page where I have added two Emergency Assistance numbers. As our advocate hasn't yet commenced work here, I've also included a link to the other advocates available within South Australia.

Almost last, but not least is the wide banner near the bottom of this page that links to the Military Shop. When you click on that link, it will redirect you to the Military Shop where you can buy a wide range of memorabilia, jewellery, clothing, tactical gear, and much more. Check it out now.

If you buy something after using this link, our Club receives a commission.

While there, you will see that our contact details have been configured to better meet the RSL's style guide.

So there you have it, what do you think about these changes? Let us know in the comments.

Another Success!

Photo of team at sausage sizzle

The Sausage Sizzle at Mitre 10, Nuriootpa went off without a hitch on Saturday.

It wasn't as busy as some sizzles we've had previously, but we still managed to meet and feed a few of the locals and make a few dollars to boot.

Those of us who volunteer to staff these events have a good time together chatting about all manner of things and in the process learning more about each other. The companionship helps make the day.

In this photo from left to right are: Dawn Nuttall, Robin Henry, Christina Henry, Charmane Klose, and Elliott Nuttall.

In the foreground, you can see our new table cover. What do you think of it?

We are always grateful to our supporters such as Mitre 10, Barossa Fresh, Nuriootpa, and the many people who drop in for a sausage or a bacon and egg roll.

Our next fundraising event is our Memorabilia Sale outside Foodland commencing 19 April 22, the Tuesday after Easter weekend. We look forward to seeing you there.

Friday Night is Happy Hour!

Join us this Friday, 30th April 2021 for Happy Hour.

Everyone is welcome after 4 pm.

Snacks and drinks will be available at a reasonable price and chatting with our members is free. There will probably be a lot of discussion about ANZAC Day which was an overwhelming success.

If you're new to our Hut, you may like to take a look at our extensive range of memorabilia. We have a collection of badges, clothing, weapons, and medals and other interesting objects on display.

We also have memorabilia for sale that includes a wide range of badges, pens, mugs, caps, and stubby holders.

See you there!

Friday 26th - Happy Hour and Mystery Meal!

Our Happy Hour with meal and snacks is this Friday 26th.

Will you join us?

We open at 5 pm for drinks and have our meals available at 6:30 pm. Meals are only $10 for a two- course meal, however, it's a mystery meal - we don't know what is being served until it is served.

That makes it a little interesting for most of us but we've never been disappointed by the meals from the Tanunda Lutheran home kitchen.

Occasionally, we cook sausages in-house or buy a pizza just for a change.

You'll never, never know what our Friday Mystery Meals are like if you don't join us for one. So why not hop in, have a cold or warm beverage, chat with our friendly group, and join us for a meal?

Preparing for ANZAC Day

For the Returned and Services League (RSL) ANZAC Day is our major annual event.

On this day we commemorate those who served and made the supreme sacrifice in all theatres of war.

During the emerging pandemic of 2020 we were disappointed that our main event was cancelled. Mini ad hoc commemorations were held by individuals and small groups at the front of their properties and in other non-public places.

It was a sound effort by millions of people around the country, but nothing on the scale of previous years since the end of World War I.

Fortunately, the strictures that affected us last year have been loosened this year and we can run ANZAC Day events while exercising sensible precautions to avoid COVID-19 exposure.

At present the Sub-Branch Management Committee is beavering away planning for our big day. There's lots to do organising a band, limited catering, and logistics for the event.

Beforehand we will be setting up a couple of donations stalls and seeking volunteers to staff them. If you are interested in helping, please contact us.

We'll keep you posted on progress towards our ANZAC Day ceremony.
